Rust Repair on a Bottom Rail

The lowest member on a gate lives in splash, mud and standing water, and it is where almost every corrosion job on a leaf begins. The assessment method used at Metal Gate Repair Pearland, TX E Wolontariat measures how far the damage runs before quoting, since on a Pearland gate the visible rust on a metal rail is usually the smaller half of the problem.

Why It Starts There

Water runs down every picket and collects at the joint with the bottom rail. Mud thrown up by vehicles sits on the top face and holds moisture against the coating for days. Inside, condensation drains to the same low point and stays there unless a drainage hole was drilled at fabrication.

Working Out the Extent

Tap along the rail with a small hammer and listen for the dull note that says the wall has thinned. Probe any blistered area, since sound paint over a hollow section is common. The damage typically runs several inches beyond anything visible, and that is what decides between a patch and a section replacement.

Patch or Replace

A small isolated hole in otherwise sound material can be cut back and a plate let in. Where the wall is thin over a length, or where several pickets have lost their footing in the rail, the section is cut out entirely and a new length welded in. A patch over thin metal has nothing to weld to.

The Pickets

Replacing a rail means releasing every picket that lands on it, which is why this job costs what it does. Each one is cut, the new rail fitted and squared, then every picket rewelded and dressed. Getting the spacing back exactly is the part that separates a good repair from an obvious one.

Preventing the Repeat

Drainage holes at the low points, a zinc rich primer over the repaired area, and a coating that wraps the underside rather than stopping where the brush stops. Clearing mud off the top face a few times a year does more than any of it, and costs nothing.

Checking the Post at the Same Time

The base of a steel post sits in the same splash zone and rusts for the same reasons, often hidden under a concrete collar. While the gate is off, the post is worth probing at ground level. A sound leaf rehung on a corroded post is a repair with a short life.
