New: A Latch That Stops Catching

Hinge Wear and Pin Replacement

Play in a hinge is measured in fractions of an inch and shows up at the far corner multiplied several times over, which is why a small amount of wear produces a gate that will not latch. The repair notes kept at Metal Gate Repair Pearland, TX E Wolontariat treat the two positions separately, because on a Pearland driveway the top and bottom of a metal leaf wear for different reasons.

How a Pin Goes Oval

A plain pin turning in a barrel carries its load on one side only, so the wear is not even around the circumference. It becomes an oval, and the leaf then drops by the amount of that ovality every time the gate swings. Grit accelerates the process, and near the coast the grit is mixed with salt.

Why the Top One Fails First

The bottom hinge carries weight in compression and stays loaded in one direction. The top hinge is being pulled away from the post, and that tension also works on its fixing. A top hinge that has started to move in its weld or its bolts is a more urgent repair than a worn bottom pin.

Replacing a Pin

Where the hinge is designed for it, the leaf is supported, the pin driven out and a new one fitted with fresh grease. Where the barrel itself has worn, a new pin in an oval barrel lasts weeks. Boring and sleeving the barrel is possible in a shop and is rarely worth it against the cost of a new hinge.

Changing a Welded Hinge

The leaf is propped, the old hinge cut off, the post and the frame ground back to clean steel, and the new one aligned before any weld is laid. Getting the alignment right is the whole job, since a hinge welded a degree out will bind through the whole travel and cannot be adjusted afterwards.

Upgrading at the Same Time

A gate that has eaten one set of plain pins will eat the next. Fitting bearing hinges during the same visit costs a little more in parts and nothing extra in labour, and it removes the fault rather than resetting the clock on it. On any leaf over six feet it is the obvious choice.

Greasing What Is Left

Where the hinge has a fitting, a small amount of grease twice a year is the whole maintenance. Where it does not, a drop of oil down the pin collar after washing the gate does most of the same work. Salt air here means the interval is closer to twice a year than once, and it is the cheapest thing on the whole gate.
