A Battery Backup That Will Not Hold
Six years is a long time for a sealed cell in a hot cabinet, and most of them are discovered dead on the evening of a storm. The service interval kept at Metal Gate Repair Pearland, TX E Wolontariat treats the backup as a wear item, because a Pearland gate that cannot open during an outage is a repair booked for the worst possible day.
Why It Fails Quietly
The charger keeps a float voltage on the battery whether or not it can still store anything, so the indicator stays green. Nothing on the panel reports capacity. The first honest test is the outage itself, which is exactly when a surprise is least welcome.
Heat Is the Main Enemy
Sealed lead acid loses life quickly above about thirty degrees, and a metal cabinet in July sun runs far hotter than the air around it. Three to four years is realistic here against the five to seven quoted elsewhere. Shading or venting the enclosure extends it more than any change of brand.
Testing Without an Outage
Switch off the supply at the breaker and run the gate through several full cycles. A healthy battery does that without slowing. One that manages a cycle and a half, or that opens slowly and will not close, has lost most of its capacity and is replaced rather than nursed.
Replacing It
Match the voltage and the case size, and match or exceed the amp hour rating. Note the date on the new one with a marker, since the label will be unreadable by the time it matters. Old cells go to a recycler rather than in a bin, and most suppliers take the old one back.
What the Backup Is For
It is there to give a handful of cycles and then stop, not to run the gate through a two day outage. Where a property genuinely needs that, the answer is a solar panel and a larger deep cycle battery sized for the load, which is a different installation rather than a bigger backup.
What Else the Battery Carries
During an outage the same cell also powers the loop detector, the keypad and the receiver, so the standby load continues even when the gate is not moving. A backup sized only for motor cycles will be flat by morning on a quiet night, which is why the calculation includes the devices as well as the drive.
Charger Faults
A charger that has failed leaves a good battery flat, and it looks identical from outside. Measuring across the terminals with the supply on tells the two apart in seconds. Fitting a new battery to a dead charger is a common and avoidable repeat visit on an older operator.
